Liberty Lane Films, LLC is wholly owned by Justin Andrew Schuck (he/him). In the film world, Justin goes by “J” with his middle name, Andrew, serving as a last name. The combined pseudonym is “J. Andrew” but everyone just calls him “J.” Since founding his first video production company in 1997 at the age of 16, “Foster Video Productions,” J has been a working photographer, video producer, and advertising executive. J’s photographs have been exhibited around the world, and his television ads for political candidates have been watched by tens of millions of people. Is this the first Liberty Lane Films?

Actually, no. J originally tried to open up a film production studio in Washington DC in 2012. Back then, J organized a different Liberty Lane Films, LLC, registered in Washington D.C. That Liberty Lane Films ultimately closed without ever producing any films, or generating any income or expenses. There is a long-dormant Twitter/X account at https://x.com/LibertyLaneFilm that we have lost access to, but, if you have a Twitter/X account, you can see the original logo, and some of the work we had in development at that time. NOTE: The current company—Liberty Lane Films, LLC of San Francisco, that maintains this website and related social media accounts—does not have any affiliation with the previous entity, nor any of its work, statements, tweets, etc.

Where did the name Liberty Lane Films come from?

Liberty Lane is the street that J grew up on in Potomac, Maryland, just outside of Washington D.C. J always said that if he ever opened up a movie studio or film production studio he would name it after that street since that’s where some of his fondest creative memories were born.

Are all of the projects and films on this website owned by liberty lane films?

No. Although nearly every film and piece featured on this website are productions of and wholly owned by Liberty Lane Films, some films, like Taking My Time, are owned by their respective filmmakers. In the case of Taking My Time, writer/director/producer Sean Reilly owns the rights to this film. However, Liberty Lane Films has been involved with this picture since pre-production, and we have continued to work with Sean to develop media and marketing materials to support this project upon its completion. Other projects, like the experimental film showcase, The Awakening of Perception, are presentations of works by other filmmakers. Their films are the sole property of their respective owners. This collection is presented as a way of experiencing a collection of complimentary experimental films, and to expose to experimental practices and forms to folks who might have no other contextual relationship to this type of work.

If I give money to back a project by purchasing one of the project backer items in the shop, where does the money go?

Every dollar generated from this website or any of our other crowdfunding initiatives goes directly to support a film’s production. This may include development costs if the film is in the earliest stages, or it may include other items like wages/salaries, expenses for equipment purchases and rentals, catering, office supplies, recording and storage media, website hosting and other fees. Basically, we use the money to cover the expenses of the production. Some money goes to pay the credit card processing fees, typically 3.5-6.5%. If your donation contains a physical perk (e.g. T-Shirt or movie poster), then some of that money goes to cover the costs and shipping for those items.

Why should I trust you with my money?

For the last few years that we’ve been making films, we have used the money received from our project backers wisely to create and release films on tidy budgets. Check out our multiple-award-winning 2022 film, Here For Now, which leveraged a $5,000 budget to tell an amazing dramatic story.

Does the money for the film ‘Meet me at the club’ go to the Castro Country Club?

No. While we have worked closely with the CCC to tell this story, this film is not funded by, sponsored by, or otherwise affiliated with the Castro Country Club and donations to support this film are not tax-deductible. Distributed funds do not benefit the CCC. This is a production of Liberty Lane Films, LLC, an independent film production company based in San Francisco, California, USA.

When can I see the finished film that I donated to?

Production schedules are frequently updated on this website. We work to deliver all of our projects on time, however, there are a number of factors that might affect the timeline of a film, including changes to the nature of a film during post-production. Another factor that can affect the timeline is aligning the film’s post-production process with a distribution strategy. Some films are staggered in a way to align with the submission deadlines of specific film festivals. We always try to deliver our films to the viewing public in a way the maximizes the energy and buzz for a film’s release.

You can also visit our Blog to get the latest updates and news, which will include updates to a film’s production and distribution timeline. Don’t hesitate to contact us with any specific questions.

Okay, so I’m a producer on a film, does that mean I am involved with the production or post-production of the film?

Depending on the current needs of a given production, or its stage in the development/production process, we may not have an opportunity for you to join physically until the premiere event. If you back a project early in the process, we often provide an opportunity for backers to join us on set during production if it is an open set. Closed set projects, or closed set days are not available to anyone not on the call sheet. Feel free to reach out to the production team here.

Does backing a project or investing in a film mean that I am a part owner of the production, or that I am entitled to any royalties or other return on my investment?

In filmmaking there are all different types of producers. Typically you have producers and executive producers who earn that title because they were materially involved with the production and the financing of a film. Then there are those who are given titles as an honorarium or as a perk for donating material resources, financial resources, or by donating their time to a given production. For the purposes of this website, and any films wholly owned by Liberty Lane Films, only Liberty Lane Films owns the rights to a film and is the sole beneficiary of any rewards or commissions derived from the sale of a film or its distribution. If you are interested in making a financial investment that would constitute an investment where partial ownership is a perk, that would need to be outlined in a contract.

But, no, investing in films through this website or any other platform through which a film is funded or partially funded, does not entitle the purchaser any rights to a film or a share of its profits.

Does backing a project guarantee me a seat at a film screening or premiere?

No. Unless one of the outlined perks includes a ticket or a reserved pass, all project backers and producers are asked to purchase tickets to the festival or other premiere event. If a movie is premiering at a private event where we are responsible for the ticket sales, it may be possible to accommodate complimentary ticket requests. In all cases, please send us a message on our website’s contact page.
